Our Ascension Day trips are one of our annual highlights, and we’re so excited to show you what shenanigans we got up to at Goodrich Castle this year!
We kicked off our Ascension Day trip with a wonderful scenic coach drive, west of Thornbury and over the Severn Bridge. We had expected rain, but as we arrived, we were all pleasantly surprised by the sun beaming down on the picturesque Goodrich Castle. And that sun blessed us all day!

Goodrich Castle: A Rich History
Goodrich Castle is entrenched in a rich history and nestled snuggly amidst the beautiful Welsh Marches. This magnificent Norman fortress, with its imposing keep and dramatic ruins, has witnessed centuries of change, from fierce battles during the English Civil War, grand banquets, and the everyday lives of its inhabitants. It was amazing to adventure through this piece of history, with its many hallways and winding staircases that took us to the highest heights of the castle, and gifted us with the picturesque views of the Wye Valley.

Ascension Day: Our Shared Experience
Ascension Day marked the 40th day after Easter, where we remember the ascent of Jesus Christ into heaven. It signifies the transition from Jesus' earthly service to his heavenly dominion. Ascension Day, for us at The Hatch, has always been a special occasion for these communal adventures. It's a time when we collectively step away from our usual rhythms and embrace the opportunity to explore beautiful places and share in this significant spiritual celebration. It's these shared experiences, whether climbing the towers of a historic castle or, in the previous year, adventuring the gardens of Dyrham Park, that allow us to deepen the bonds within our community, in the fun that we have with one another.

As the trip came to a close, once our legs grew tired and hearts felt full, we enjoyed a delightful picnic lunch of sandwiches and cake in the delicious sunshine. And to finish it all off, as any historic trip should, we took a wonder through the gift shop.
It was the perfect end to a memorable outing, filled with history, stunning scenery, and meaningful reflection. We truly are so grateful for these precious moments together.
And we can't wait until next year!
